Who You Are Matters

Olivia Marie Osborne

From Chino Hills, CA, I am Olivia Osborne and I am studying communication and minoring in
Spanish. As great as Chino Hills was for my childhood I never plan on living there again and
intend on staying in Los Angeles. I accepted a job offer to work at an agency in Hollywood
after graduation so my dreams to live in Los Angeles are no longer dreams, this is my reality.

My family has played a fundamental role in my life and I could not imagine growing up with
anyone else. I am privileged to come from parents who have emotionally and financially
supported me.  They have always encouraged me that I could do anything I wanted and
instilled confidence in me at a young age. Thanks to them, I was a badass first grade female
who scored the winning goal in my championship hockey game on a primarily all boys team!
Because of my parents’ relentless encouragement in my life, I have always been one to set
high expectations for myself.

Like my mom I am very outgoing, enthusiastic, compassionate, and unfortunately stubborn.
ThankfullyI did not inherit her religious views, we are on very different pages in that regard.
While I definitely share more of my mom’s personality I do have the same sense of humor as
my dad. On the other hand my brother, Jared, is my role model.  Yes I know we weren’t
supposed to choose a family member as our model for success but I can’t lie, he is truly my
role model and will always be. He attended boarding school, graduated NYU in three years,
taught in the Mississippi Delta through Teach for America, served as a mentor in a nonprofit
in Brooklyn, and is now on a fat scholarship at USC Gould School of Law that puts my time
here at USC to shame. But really, Jared is sincerely the most determined, motivated, and
selfless people I know. I strive to be like him and embody the characteristics he has.

Now in regards to the animal world I guess I would compare myself to a sloth because I love
sleeping and eating. Actually, when I was a child I saw a sloth in a tree in a jungle in Costa
Rica and it was the best nature moment of my life. The tree and the sloth were the most
beautiful couple I had ever seen. They were a match made in heaven for one another.

Rising Sign = Sagittarius
Moon Sign = Sagittarius
Sun Sign = Pisces

^ I truly don't know what any of that means about who I am.

    1. Olivia,

Reading this brought the biggest smile to my face. Congratulations friend on figuring out your next steps but an even larger congratulations for being at a point where you feel like you are living out a dream. I completely feel you on not inherenting our parent's religious views. Definitely didn't get passed down but also don't know if I am disappointed about it. It was a pleasure to read.

  2. I love that you chose a sloth. I was thinking about doing the same animal for mine for similar reasons. Definitely not a bad life to have.

Sounds like you have gotten the expectations you have set for yourself similar to how I have. I think it is awesome how supportive your parents have been!

  3. Hi,

I think its great that you're able to live out your dream of living and working in Los Angeles! Your sloth experience sounds really awe-inspiring and its awesome it still has such an impact on who you are.

Also, I think its funny you went to Fullerton and even played San Clemente in CIF. If it was hosted at San Clemente there is a good chance I was in the stands heckling you ... so, sorry for that, haha.

  4. It's fantastic that you've already figured out your next steps! Congratulations on your job for next year I hope you enjoy it! Also, I appreciate that you're minoring in a language, especially Spanish, as it's so useful around here and just good to know regardless. Your sloth comparison was also great as there's something special about those seemingly constantly content creatures.

  5. Hey Olivia!

Congrats on achieving your goal of working and living in LA! I love that you chose the sloth because I chose the panda for the same exact reasons.

Hockey is so fun to watch, I hope I can make it to some Kings games this season. What position did you play?

  6. Hi Olivia!

Congrats on getting that job straight out of school, I'm sure that's making graduation that much more exciting for you! How amazing that you have an older brother that has accomplished so much and can be a role model in your life.

Although I've only been to a couple Kings games, Hockey is probably my favorite sport to watch live. It's seriously so exciting and not drawn out too long.

I look forward to getting to know you more this semester!

    Best,

    Allegra
