A WORLD WE DARE TO IMAGINE PART 3 ORGANIZATION  WYSE - Women and Youth Supporting Each Other MISSION Women and Youth Supporting Each Other envisions a world in which all women are empowered to determine their future and effect change. The organization strives to empower young women by providing the resources and support necessary to make positive life choices and create community change.  By connecting middle school girls from low income communities with female college students, WYSE helps women to form meaningful relationships that benefit both the mentor and mentee. The mentors educate the middle schoolers on sex education, personal identity, healthy relationships, social media, etc. Once a week, mentors from the local university will lead an after school lesson of roughly three hours. Each lesson covers a different topics filled with activities, ice breakers, and lots of snacks. At the end of every lesson, the girls are encouraged to fill out anonymous qu...

A WORLD WE DARE TO IMAGINE PART 1

A WORLD WE DARE TO IMAGINE PART 1 This assignment is certainly the most overwhelming Professor Hansen has given us thus far. How do we even dare to imagine what our first step would be in making the world a better place? There are so many problems in the world, it's overwhelming! I want to mentor underprivileged youth, help make the world sustainable, save every single homeless dog, make education more accessible, help make healthcare more affordable, etc. Clearly I can't do all of that, which I think is the biggest challenge we face as humans: wanting to fix everything but realisti cally not being able to. That being said, if there was one thing I do to fully apply myself to in helping make the world a better place, it would be mentoring middle school girls worldwide.  Last year I was fortunate enough to be accepted into a fantastic non-profit at USC called Women and Youth Supporting Each Other, also known as WYSE. In WYSE, we mentor girls at middle schools nearby USC...

The Pain of my First Love He was the thing I loved the most, but the thing that also broke me. When we met, I was instantly swept away. His eyes penetrated my heart and I was memorized by their dazzling green color. He brought out feelings in me that I never knew existed.  He was fearless when he approached me. In fact, he confidently brushed up against me multiple times and left me wanting more with each encounter. We quickly began to spend a lot of time together. After school we would sit on the porch and cuddle together. He would put his head in my lap as I sat there in pure bliss. He was all mine and I was unconditionally his.  But then my body broke. Each time we were together, my body would shatter in pain and feel horrible. He would touch me and my body would automatically reject him. He tried so hard to make things better, but the damage was done. My body could not handle the pain that he brought. My eyes would swell up each time we wer...
Born on the Third Base Part V: Wealth Come Home  Chuck Collin's book, Born on the Third Base , proved to be far more exciting than I expected. Now, I only read part V of the book so I can't speak for its entirety; however, I genuinely appreciated his arguments and encouragements for what needs to happen in society. I think many writers and researchers dive very deep into society's problems without reflecting on what tools we have right now that can be used and applied to alleviate the issues we face. It was great that Collin's took the time to identify what is wrong but then highlight how we have the capacity right now to work together and fix some of life's issues. I also appreciated how he incorporated all personal examples because it made his writing much more sincere and meaningful to read. If time allows, I might even read the rest of his book. What a thought!  Part V dives into wealth barriers in society and the need for people to come together to l...

Random Blog Post - Song Review of "Seventeen" By Sharon Van Etten

“Seventeen” by Sharon Van Etten https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j7sTHoeH0eA "I see you so uncomfortably alone, I wish I could show you how much you’ve grown." Those lyrics plunged deep into my soul as I listened to Sharon Van Etten tear apart my heart the first time I heard her song “Seventeen” off of her latest album Remind Me Tomorrow . Sharon put to words thoughts I couldn’t even articulate about my adolescence. She poured out the most intimate thoughts about her life that were so personal yet relatable for many of us. Her vulnerability in Seventeen taps into my own insecurity I had at that age, yet strength I have now for the person I’ve become. Oh how I wish I could go tell my seventeen year old self that everything would be okay. I was wide eyed yet confused and desperate to find certainty in life. “You’re just seventeen” would probably sound so trivial to hear at the age of seventeen but I needed someone like my twenty two year old self to remind hi...
